Però, mentre inventavo iniziative da proporre agli amici, mi capitava anche di fantasticare da solo per ore.Oggi non sono cambiato molto. La mia fortuna – con la fotografia – è che una traccia dei miei pensieri può rimanere un po’ più a lungo, per me stesso e per chi decide di acquistare o solo guardare una mia opera.La mia fortuna è, anche, che persone importanti hanno creduto nel mio lavoro, permettendomi di inventare mostre schioppettanti e altri avvenimenti visivi.Tutta questa fortuna ha forse origine proprio dal giorno in cui nacqui, tra un bombardamento e un altro: per festeggiare la mia nascita, Napoli organizzò la festa più bella della sua storia, che durò quattro giorni. Inutile dire che sono molto orgoglioso di ciò.
Sergio Riccio è artista noto in Europa, sia per le sue collaborazioni a importanti riviste di architettura e design, sia per le mostre, personali e collettive, tenute in numerose e prestigiose sedi espositive.
Sue immagini sono conservate alla Bibliothèque Nationale di Parigi e all’Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica di Roma. Ha tenuto seminari sulla fotografia all’Università di Roma-Tor Vergata e all’Università di Napoli-Federico II.
Riccio si è interessato da sempre al problema del linguaggio e a come la fotografia possa rendere, forse meglio di altre arti, concetti filosofici. Emblematica, a questo riguardo, la sua ricerca sull’occhio (Vedere Essere, Napoli 1998) nonché quella sulla trasposizione, in immagini, del silenzio (Bagnoli anno zero, Napoli e Parigi 2003, Bologna 2004). Sul tema del silenzio postindustriale pure il volume Le luci di Napoli (Colonnese 2004).
A Napoli Riccio ha dedicato la trilogia su barocco (Napoli 1988, Parigi 1990, Lille 1991, Nantes 1992), liberty (Roma e Capri 1999, Monaco di Baviera 2000, Napoli 2001) e Vesuvio (Pompei Scavi 2002, Ravello 2003, Napoli PAN 2006).
Nel 2011 grande interesse al Tacheles di Berlino per la sua mostra Napoli notturna inserita nell’iniziativa del Museo CAM. Nello stesso anno Riccio viene invitato alla Biennale di Venezia.
Grande interesse, nel 2015, ha suscitato la mostra Quel che resta, presentata a catalogo da Marina Miraglia.

While thinking initiatives to propose to friends, I also found myself daydreaming alone for hours. Today, I haven't changed much. Thanks to photography, my fortune is that a trace of my thoughts can linger a bit longer, for myself and for those who decide to buy or just gaze at my work. My luck also lies in the fact that important people have believed in my work, allowing me to create lively exhibitions and other visual events. Perhaps all this luck originates from the day I was born, amidst one bombardment after another: to celebrate my birth, Naples organized the most beautiful party in its history, lasting four days. Needless to say, I am very proud of that."

His images are preserved at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica in Rome. Throughout his career, Riccio has always tried to solve the language of the medium and how photography can convey philosophical concepts, perhaps better than other art forms. His research on the eye ("Vedere Essere," Naples 1998) and the transposition of silence into images ("Bagnoli anno zero," Naples and Paris 2003, Bologna 2004) is emblematic in this regard. He also explored the theme of post-industrial silence in the volume "Le luci di Napoli" (Colonnese 2004).
To Napoli, Riccio dedicated trilogies to Baroque (Naples 1988, Paris 1990, Lille 1991, Nantes 1992), Liberty (Rome and Capri 1999, Munich 2000, Naples 2001), and Vesuvius (Pompei Scavi 2002, Ravello 2003, Naples PAN 2006).
